About this tour

Trnovačko Lake sits at 1,687 metres above sea level, cradled in a glacial cirque on the BiH–Montenegro border — one of the most photogenic spots in the entire Balkans. The approach crosses the Prijevor pass, traversing highland meadows and ridgeline views that open across both countries. The lake itself, heart-shaped when seen from above, is famous enough to appear on Bosnian currency.

Sutjeska National Park is one of the oldest protected areas in former Yugoslavia, containing the Perućica reserve — one of Europe's last two remaining primeval forests. This route takes you through both the highland and forest ecosystems in a single two-day journey.

Day by day

Day 1

Through the forest & up to Prijevor

Start from the Sutjeska valley. Hike through the edge of Perućica primeval forest (special permit required, included). Ascend to the Prijevor plateau — open highland with sweeping views. Lunch at altitude. Continue to the shore of Trnovačko Lake for overnight camping or mountain hut.

Day 2

Morning at the lake & return

Early morning at Trnovačko Lake — the water mirrors the sky and the surrounding peaks. Optional swim (cold but unforgettable). Return via an alternative route through different highland terrain. Descend back to the valley by afternoon.

🏠

Planinski dom Prijevor — mountain hut at 1,524m

Prijevor is the main mountain hut in Sutjeska National Park, situated at the saddle between the Sutjeska valley and the Trnovačko basin. It sleeps up to 20 people in shared bunk rooms. The hut keeper serves home-cooked dinners (lamb, local vegetables, soup, cheese) and a simple breakfast. There is no electricity in the rooms — bring a headlamp. Hot water is available. The hut is a 30-minute walk from the lake, making it a perfect base for an early morning visit before other guests arrive.

Frequently asked questions

Perućica is a 1,434-hectare strict nature reserve — one of only two remaining primeval forests in Europe. Entry is strictly controlled and requires a licensed guide at all times. Your guide's permit is included in your tour price. You cannot enter Perućica independently.

Yes — in July and August, water temperature reaches 16–18°C. It's cold but absolutely worth it. There is no beach — you enter from rocks at the shore. The water clarity is exceptional; you can see to 5+ metres depth.

The ascent to Prijevor gains 1,200m over approximately 7 km — a demanding but manageable day for regular hikers. The path is well-marked. Good boots are essential. Poles help on the descent.

Late August and September for the lake colour and crowds (minimal). July for swimming. Avoid very early June when snowfields may remain on the approach.
