Getting here &
getting around

Bosnia and Herzegovina isn't the most straightforward destination to reach — but that's part of what keeps it wild. Here's everything you need to know to get to your starting point.

There are no direct flights to the main national parks from most European cities — you'll fly into a regional hub and transfer by road.

✈️

Sarajevo (SJJ)

The main entry point. Direct flights from London, Vienna, Istanbul, Amsterdam, Frankfurt, Munich, and Zagreb. Good base for Sutjeska, Zelengora, and Tara trips.

✈️

Mostar (OMO)

Small airport, seasonal routes from London Gatwick (Ryanair) and a few other European cities. Convenient for Neretva rafting trips.

✈️

Dubrovnik (DBV)

Croatia's most-connected regional airport. Well-connected from UK, Germany, Nordics. 2.5 hrs by bus to Mostar, 4–5 hrs to Sarajevo.

✈️

Belgrade (BEG)

Serbia's main hub with frequent flights from across Europe. Good option for Tara Canyon — it's roughly 4–5 hrs by bus to Šćepan Polje via Zlatibor.

Tip: For Tara Canyon tours, flying into Podgorica (Montenegro) is another option — about 2.5 hrs to Šćepan Polje by car.

Buses are the main long-distance transport in the Balkans. They're reliable, cheap, and cover routes that trains don't.

🚌

Dubrovnik → Sarajevo

Daily buses, approximately 4.5–5 hours, €15–20. Cross the border at Neum or Trebinje. Book ahead in summer.

🚌

Split → Sarajevo

Multiple daily departures, 5–6 hours, €15–22. A very popular route with reliable operators including FlixBus.

🚌

Zagreb → Sarajevo

Overnight buses available, 7–8 hours, €20–30. Good option to save on accommodation if you're coming from northern Croatia.

🚌

Belgrade → Foča / Šćepan Polje

No direct bus — take a bus to Foča and arrange a transfer from there, or rent a car. We can help coordinate this for booked guests.

🚌

Sarajevo → Foča (for Tara & Sutjeska tours)

Local buses run daily, ~2.5 hours, €8–10. From Foča you'll need a short taxi or transfer to your tour's starting point. We can arrange this.

🇧🇦

Bosnia & Herzegovina

EU citizens and most Western passport holders enter visa-free for up to 90 days. No Schengen membership — stamp is separate. Passports must be valid for 3 months beyond your stay.

🇲🇪

Montenegro

Visa-free for EU, UK, US, Canadian, and Australian passport holders. No visa needed for stays up to 90 days. The Tara Canyon sits on the BiH–Montenegro border — you may cross between both countries during a tour.

🛂

Crossing at Šćepan Polje

The Tara rafting put-in at Šćepan Polje is right on the border. There's a small crossing there. Bring your passport even if you're staying on the BiH side.

Always check: Entry requirements change. Verify current requirements with your country's official foreign travel advisory before booking.

🚗

Rental car (recommended)

Best way to reach trailheads and rafting put-ins. Roads are improving but some mountain roads are unpaved — ask about road conditions for your specific tour.

  • Sarajevo and Mostar have all major rental companies
  • International driving licence accepted
  • Green Card insurance needed
🚕

Taxis & transfers

Available in all towns. Inexpensive by Western standards. For trailheads and river put-ins outside town, we can arrange private transfers for booked guests.

🚐

Minibus transfers

For groups of 4+ we can arrange shared minibus transfers to and from all tour starting points. Ask when booking — costs vary by distance.

🚍

Local buses

Cover major towns well. Rural routes are infrequent — often once or twice daily. Not reliable for hitting tour start times unless you're staying locally the night before.

🏁

Tara River tours → Šćepan Polje

On the BiH–Montenegro border. ~2.5 hrs from Sarajevo, ~3 hrs from Dubrovnik, ~4 hrs from Belgrade. No public bus — taxi from Foča or rental car.

🏁

Maglić & Sutjeska tours → Tjentište

Inside Sutjeska National Park. ~2 hrs from Sarajevo, ~1.5 hrs from Foča. Sutjeska is best reached by car — local bus from Foča runs once daily.

🏁

Zelengora Lakes → Zelengora plateau

Road access from Foča or Kalinovik. A 4WD or high-clearance vehicle is recommended for the upper road to the plateau trailhead.

🏁

Neretva rafting → Konjic

1.5 hrs from Sarajevo, 1.5 hrs from Mostar. Direct buses from both cities. Easiest starting point to reach by public transport.

🏁

Una rafting → Bihać / Martin Brod

Northwest Bosnia, ~4 hrs from Sarajevo, ~3 hrs from Zagreb. Easiest to reach from Croatia — regular buses from Plitvice Lakes and Zagreb.

🏁

Vrbas rafting → Banja Luka

Northern Bosnia. Direct flights from some European cities, or bus from Sarajevo (~3 hrs). The most accessible starting point on the programme.

💱

Currency

Bosnian Convertible Mark (BAM / KM). Pegged to the Euro at 1 EUR = 1.95 KM. Euros accepted in many tourist areas. ATMs available in all towns.

📱

SIM cards & data

BH Telecom and m:tel have good coverage in towns. Signal is limited in the national parks and deep canyons — download offline maps before you go.

🏥

Travel insurance

Not included in tour prices. We strongly recommend a policy that covers adventure activities (rafting, hiking at altitude). Check your policy covers water sports and mountain rescue.

🗣️

Language

Bosnian (also Serbian and Croatian — mutually intelligible). English is widely spoken in tourist areas and by all our guides. German and Italian also understood in many areas.
