About this tour

Maglić stands at 2,386 metres — the highest point in Bosnia and Herzegovina, sitting exactly on the border with Montenegro deep inside Sutjeska National Park. It's not a technically difficult climb, but it's a serious mountain: the approach is long, the ridge is exposed, and the views from the top are staggering — south into the Montenegro highlands, north over the primary forest of Perućica, one of Europe's last remaining primeval forests.

We offer this as both a long one-day summit push and a comfortable two-day version with overnight accommodation at the mountain hut. Both options are guided by local mountaineers who have climbed Maglić hundreds of times.

Day by day

Day 1

Trailhead to summit and back (1-day option)

Early start (07:00) from the Sutjeska valley trailhead. Ascend through mixed forest, then open alpine terrain above the tree line. Summit reached in 4–5 hours. 30–45 minutes on the top — views into both countries, optional crossing to the Montenegrin side for a different perspective. Descent same route, arrive trailhead by 17:00–18:00. Total: ~1,400 m elevation gain, ~20 km.

Day 1

Relaxed ascent to mountain hut (2-day option)

Morning start, pace set for comfort rather than speed. Reach the mountain hut below the ridge by afternoon. Dinner and overnight at the hut. Evening views over the national park.

Day 2

Summit morning & descent (2-day option)

Early morning summit push for sunrise on the peak — often above the cloud layer. Breakfast at hut, then full descent to the trailhead. Finish by midday.

🏔

Mountain hut — Prijevor Saddle (1,524m)

The 2-day option overnights at the Prijevor mountain shelter — a basic but welcoming stone hut at 1,524 metres on the saddle below Maglić's final ridge. Bunks sleep 4–10 people in shared rooms. Blankets and pillows provided. The hut keeper serves hot meals in the evening and breakfast before the summit push. It is rustic — no showers, basic toilets — but after a long day on the mountain the warmth and food are exactly what you want.

Frequently asked questions

This is our most demanding tour. You need to be a regular hiker comfortable with 8+ hour mountain days, 1,900m of elevation gain, and some scrambling on loose scree near the summit. If you hike at home once a week and handle full-day mountain walks, you will be fine. If you're unsure, start with the Zelengora Lakes tour to test your fitness.

Hiking boots with ankle support are essential — the descent from the summit ridge involves loose limestone scree where trail shoes are dangerous. Trekking poles are strongly recommended. We provide a full kit list when you book.

Afternoon electrical storms are possible from June to August. We start early (07:00) to be off the exposed ridge before 14:00. September typically has the most stable weather and exceptional visibility.

Not comfortably. The 2-day option is the right choice if you want to see the lake — you summit on the morning of Day 2 after overnighting at Prijevor, then visit Trnovačko during the descent. Attempting both in one day means 25+ km and 2,200m of gain — possible but punishing.
