We're not a travel agency with a Balkans portfolio. We're guides who grew up here — and decided to share what we love about these places with people who are genuinely curious about them.
WildBalkans was founded in 2019 by a small group of local guides from Bosnia and Herzegovina who shared a frustration: the Balkans were getting more visitors, but most were being shepherded through tourist resorts and sanitised excursions that had little to do with the real landscape.
We wanted international travellers to experience the Balkans the way we know them — the gorges you reach by scrambling, the rivers that run cold and green through untouched forest, the mountain huts where the host knows every path above the treeline.
We're based in Sarajevo and run tours across Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, and Croatia. Every guide on our team is a local — from the regions where we operate — and has been working these routes for years before WildBalkans existed.
We started with one hike in Sutjeska National Park. We still guide it ourselves. Every tour on this site is a route we know personally — not a product we resell from a third-party operator.
Hiking tours: max 8 people. Rafting tours: max 12. These are hard limits, not guidelines. The size is the point — it's what separates a guided wilderness experience from a tourist convoy.
Every hiking guide holds Bosnian mountain guide certification. Every rafting guide is licensed by the national rafting federation. We carry full liability insurance on every tour. Not optional.
Since 2019 we've run trips through floods, drought, record heat, and a global pandemic. We've managed evacuations, reroutes, and last-minute changes. We're not improvising.
No restaurant kickbacks, no souvenir stops, no shortcuts through protected zones. Every stop is a wild place — a glacial lake, a canyon wall, a ridge at 2,300m — chosen because it's worth the effort.
When you message us on WhatsApp or email, you're not reaching a call centre. You're talking to the people who will be with you on the trail. Questions before, during, and after — answered by someone who was there.
We cap tours at 14 people. Guides know you by name before you reach the trailhead. The routes we use are inaccessible to large tour groups — because we've spent years earning access to them.
Our guides are from these places. They grew up here, went to school here, and share this landscape as their own — not as something learned from a training manual. That's a different kind of knowledge.
We give back to Sutjeska National Park. No campfire scars, no shortcuts through protected zones, no cutting corners on waste. The wilderness is what we're selling — so we protect it fiercely.
