How hard is it?

Tour difficulty guide

Every WildBalkans tour is rated on a four-level scale for hiking and a standard international scale for rafting. Here's exactly what each level means — so you can choose with confidence.

● Easy

Level 1 — Easy

Accessible to almost anyone in reasonable health

Up to 10 kmDaily distance
Up to 300 mElevation gain
3–4 hrsActive time

Well-marked paths on mostly flat or gently rolling terrain. No technical sections, scrambling, or steep descents. Suitable for beginners, older adults, and families with older children (10+).

You don't need to be a regular hiker to enjoy an Easy-rated tour — a basic level of general fitness is all that's required. These tours are paced for comfort, not speed.

● Moderate

Level 2 — Moderate

For those who hike or exercise regularly

10–18 kmDaily distance
300–700 mElevation gain
5–7 hrsActive time

Trails may include uneven surfaces, rocky sections, and steady climbs. No technical climbing or scrambling but you should be comfortable on mountain paths. Good grip footwear essential.

You should exercise at least twice a week and be comfortable walking for several hours at a time. Most people in good general health handle Moderate tours without difficulty.

● Challenging

Level 3 — Challenging

For experienced hikers and active adventurers

15–25 kmDaily distance
700–1,200 mElevation gain
7–9 hrsActive time

Sustained ascents and descents on mountain terrain. Some sections may require using hands for balance. Altitude above 1,800m on certain tours. Weather can change rapidly — layered clothing and waterproofs are required.

You should be a regular hiker comfortable with full mountain days. Experience on high-altitude or alpine terrain is a strong advantage. These tours require focus and consistent fitness — not just occasional weekend walks.

● Expert

Level 4 — Expert

Multi-day expeditions for serious adventurers

20+ km/dayDaily distance
1,200+ mElevation gain
Multiple daysDuration

Extended multi-day expeditions in remote terrain, far from roads and infrastructure. Overnight stays in riverside camps or high mountain huts. Total physical and mental commitment required over several consecutive days.

You need proven multi-day wilderness experience, excellent fitness, and the mental resilience to stay positive when conditions are tough. These are the tours you train for — they're also the most rewarding we offer.
